The Science Behind the Score
How GearScore™ Works
Every piece of outdoor gear scored 0–100 using real reviews, live pricing, expert field testing, and data synthesis. No brand relationships. No paid placements. No guesswork.
Score Bands
Every product falls into one of four bands based on its GearScore™. Unrated products (below 60) are shown but excluded from Top rankings.
Best-in-class. Elite gear that outperforms in every measurable category. Buy with complete confidence.
Excellent. Strong performer with only minor trade-offs. Great choice for most buyers.
Good. Solid product with some notable limitations. Consider your specific needs before buying.
Adequate. Significant trade-offs or limited data. Budget-conscious option, research carefully.
The Five Components
GearScore™ is built from five weighted components. Each is scored independently then combined into the final 0–100 score.
How effectively the product executes its primary function. Measured against Platinum-tier benchmarks for the specific activity — a hunting rifle scope is assessed on optical clarity, turret precision, and low-light capability; a scuba regulator on breathing effort, cold-water performance, and depth rating.
Data inputs
Build quality, materials, warranty, and long-term reliability signals. Gear that survives five seasons scores higher than gear that fails after one. Water resistance ratings, impact standards, and material grades all factor in.
Data inputs
Price relative to performance — not just "is it cheap" but "does what you pay for match what you get." A $300 item that outperforms $500 alternatives scores higher on Value than the $500 item, even if the $500 item scores higher overall.
Data inputs
Aggregated community sentiment, weighted by review depth and source expertise. A 4.8-star average from 12 verified buyers on a specialist platform weighs more than a 4.8-star average from 4,000 unverified reviews on a general marketplace.
Data inputs
Brand reputation for quality, customer service, and standing in the outdoor community. Established brands with track records of innovation and support score higher. This is the smallest component — a great product from an unknown brand still scores well.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can brands pay to improve their GearScore™?
No. GearScore™ is calculated entirely from publicly available data — prices, reviews, specs, and expert opinions. We have no brand relationships, sponsorships, or affiliate-influenced scoring. Affiliate links help fund the platform, but retailers and brands cannot influence scores.
How often are scores updated?
The full catalog is rescored when significant new data is available or a new model version improves scoring quality. Individual products can be flagged for rescoring when major reviews, price changes, or new versions appear. Scores show the model version and date in the methodology footer.
What if a product has very few reviews?
Fewer reviews reduce the User Reviews component score and trigger a lower "data confidence" flag internally. We never invent reviews. Products with thin data coverage are scored conservatively and labeled as such.
Do you score every category the same way?
The five components stay constant, but what constitutes "Performance" is category-specific. A trail running shoe is assessed on cushioning, stack height, and ground feel — not waterproofing. A diving regulator is assessed on breathing effort at depth, not optical clarity. Each category has a tailored scoring prompt.
Why does my favorite product score lower than I expected?
GearScore™ is a data-driven composite. A product can be beloved by a niche community but score lower on Value (if it's overpriced for its performance) or Durability (if reliability issues appear in long-term reviews). The score reflects the full picture, not just enthusiast sentiment.
